Jason Williams, before becoming an NBA champion with the Miami Heat as a prototypical point guard in 2006, was arguably the most exciting rookie to come into the league at the point guard position since Magic Johnson in 1979-80. Dazzling fans with behind-the-back passes and breaking ankles with sick dribbling moves made him a mainstay on sportscenter’s Top Ten Plays features throughout 1998-99. However, he ran into trouble in Game 5 of this series, and had a nightmarish performance in this winner-take-all game played under the old 5-game first round format. Jason finished with 2 points on 1-of-6 shooting, including 0-of-4 on three-point shots. He dished out 3 assists, grabbed 2 rebounds, had 1 steal, 1 turnover, and committed 5 fouls in trying to guard all-time great John Stockton. We still love you, Jason. (For reference, Kings coach Rick Adelman sat Jason Williams on the bench for the final 2 minutes of the 3rd quarter, the entire 4th quarter, and the first 4:30 or so of overtime.
